On the second day of the launch event, Xiaomi launched its first foldable smartphone, the Mi Mix Fold. The company is considering it the successor of Mi Mix 3 (aka Mi Mix Alpha), which was never made commercial to the general public.
In case you don’t know, the Mi Mix is Xiaomi’s experimental series of smartphones, where Xiaomi experiments and test new technologies before introducing it to other smartphone series like Mi flagships, Redmi mid-range, and POCO flagship killer.
A couple of weeks ago, we saw a few leaked prototype of the upcoming foldable smartphone from Xiaomi, but we didn’t expect it to be this early. Xiaomi launched the full fledged working smartphone that will be available for pre-order in China.
Mi Mix Fold Design
Now, coming to the design of the foldable smartphone, first, it is foldable, well it is obvious, isn’t it? Other than that we have already seen a similar design with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X series of smartphones. The Mi Mix Fold also features a similar design.
The display offers an inward folding design which means we will be able to fold the lid in the closing inside the manner. We have a tall outer display and a huge tablet-like display on the inside.
Mi Mix Fold Specifications
Speaking of the hardware and software specification of the smartphone, the Mi Mix Fold features a huge 8.01-inch flexible OLED panel in the front side of the smartphone with an aspect ratio of 4:3. And in the rear side, the smartphone also has a secondary 6.52-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 90Hz and a touch sampling rate of 180Hz. The secondary display has an aspect ratio of 27:9. The primary display supports Dolby Vision, MEMC, and DCI-P3 color gamut, whereas both the displays support up to 900 nits of peak brightness, and HDR10+ certification.
Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The Snapdragon 888 is an octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 680 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 680 & 4×1.80 GHz Kryo 680) SoC with Adreno 660 GPU for best graphical performance. The foldable smartphone also has a new Butterfly cooling system that includes a “large-area VC liquid cooling, thermal gel, multilayer graphite sheets, and other heat dissipation methods” for efficient heat dissipation.
In the camera department, the Mi Mix Fold houses a triple rear camera setup. The setup includes a primary 108-megapixel primary camera sensor with an aperture of f/1.8, a secondary 8-megapixel liquid lens (telephoto+macro) with up to 3X optical zoom & up to 30x digital zoom, and finally a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor with an aperture of f/2.4 and a viewing angle of 123-degrees. The liquid lens “uses the principle of human eye bionics, forming a lens-like structure with a transparent fluid wrapped in film.”
The smartphone is fueled by a massive 5,020mAh battery that can be charged using the 67-watt wired fast charger. According to the company, the smartphone can be charged from 0-100% within 37 minutes. The smartphone runs of Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 12 which is running on top of Android 10. The smartphone includes all the necessary connectivity options and basic sensors like Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC (market/region dependent), IR, fingerprint (side-mounted) sensor, accelerometer, gyro, etc.
Mi Mix Fold Pricing and Availability
The Mi Mix Fold will be available in two different RAM/ROM variants. The base 12GB+256GB variant will be available for CNY 9,999 (~Rs. 1,11,745), whereas the top 12GB+512GB variant comes in price tag of CNY 10,999 (~Rs. 1,22,900).
There is also a Mi Mix Special Edition with a ceramic back panel, where the company has tried to simulate a kevlar design. The special variant will be available in 16GB+512GB variant which will be priced at CNY 12,999 (~Rs. 1,45,275).
It goes up for pre-order starting today and will be available to buy from 16th April in China.
