Comet browser goes free worldwide as Perplexity AI steps into the browser wars

From paid to free

When it was first launched in July, the Comet browser was available only for Perplexity Max subscribers at a price of $200 per month.

What comet browser offers?

The Comet browser is different from normal browsers because it has a personal AI assistant built in. The tool is meant to help users do simple online work like writing mails, shopping, searching the web, or even managing multiple tabs.

Instead of using separate apps, users can do most of these inside the browser itself, which makes the experience faster and easier.

Comet Plus subscription

Along with the free release, Perplexity has started a new subscription called Comet Plus. It costs $5 a month, but it is free if you are a Pro or Max subscriber.

The idea behind Comet Plus is to provide direct access to premium journalism and at the same time support the publishers.

Perplexity has already tied up with CNN, The Washington Post, Fortune, The Los Angeles Times, and Condé Nast titles like Vogue and The New Yorker.

Readers who subscribe will get news and analysis directly inside the Comet browser, while publishers will be paid based on the use and value of their content.

Why this matters?

The company is using a two-part plan. The free Comet browser will bring in more people, while Comet Plus will make sure there is a business model that also helps journalism survive in the AI age. It is both a product strategy and a way to show responsibility toward publishers.

Overall, by opening up the Comet browser to the public and adding Comet Plus, Perplexity AI is trying to build its place in the market.

The move makes it a new challenger against traditional browsers and also against AI-based browsers from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.
