For almost a decade, we’ve enabled people to download their information from Facebook. The photo transfer tool we’re starting to roll out today is based on code developed through our participation in the open-source Data Transfer Project”, Steve Satterfield director of privacy and public policy at Facebook said addressing Facebook’s new tool i.e., Facebook Data Transfer Tool, which enables directly transferring the photos you post on Facebook to your friendly cloud service, i.e. Google photos.

Cloud storage is an avenue which is old enough but not that mainstream yet, we all know of it, somewhat, but mostly we don’t utilize this function, yet. As with this new tool that Facebook is introducing, if you were one of those people who didn’t back up your photos, this feature will automatically help you do that to your Google account’s cloud.

And it’s not just Google Photos, but other services would also be rolled out by Facebook in the future. Other companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Twitter are also a part of this Data Transfer Project which is an open-source project aiming for better and convenient data transfer from one service to another.

It aims to offer not only convenience but also data privacy and cyber safety as giant conglomerates are coming together to sort of build a safe space. And so the integration of Google photos with Facebook is just one of the few initial features that are being rolled out.

This tool has now been released in Ireland and is being tested for feedback from users and hence identifying the scope of improvement. Worldwide this would be released by the first half of 2020.
