Discord is one of the main hanging-out platforms for many creators and streamers. One of the main reasons for that is it gets regular updates for bug fixes and new features. This makes the platform quite reliable.
Now some users get the Discord update failed error in which the Discord app doesn’t update and gets stuck in the update loop.
Well, nothing worry here. In this article, I am going to show you some methods by which you can fix the Discord update failed loop error on your PC.
Fix Discord Update Failed Error
Run Discord as Administrator
Granting admin rights to an app allows it more permissions and you can do try doing so with Discord if you are facing the update loop error. Here is how to run Discord as an administrator:
- Just go to the Windows Task Bar, and click on the Search tab.
- Here, type “Discord” and right-click on the app.
- Finally, select “Run as administrator” from the options.
Now try updating your Discord and you should be all good.
Rename Update.exe File
Sometimes, it is an old update executable file that causes this error. You can easily resolve this by just renaming the Update.exe file. Here is how to do it:
Step 1: Open File Explorer and navigate to the following path: “C:\Users\Username\AppData”
Step 2: Inside the AppData folder, open the Local folder.
Step 3: Inside the folder, navigate and find the Discord folder. Once you find it, open it as well.
Step 4: Here, navigate and select the Update.exe file, right-click on it and click on Rename.
Step 5: Rename it as “UpdateX.exe”
That’s it! Now just restart your computer and try updating your Discord. Hopefully, the Discord update failed loop error will be gone for you.
Turn Off Windows Defender
Sometimes Windows Defender or any other third-party antivirus hinders Discord updates. You can try disabling them temporarily and that should fix the issue. Here is how to turn off your Windows Defender:
Step 1: Go to the Windows Search Bar, type “Settings” and hit enter.
Step 2: Click on Update & Security.
Step 3: Here, click on Windows Security on the left and then click on Open Windows Security.
Step 4: Click on Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
Step 5: Turn off Real-time protection using the toggle.
Now just quickly try updating your Discord. Once it updates make sure to turn back Windows Defender on.
Disable Any Third-Party Antivirus
If you are using any third-party antivirus, chances are that is causing the Discord update failed error on your PC. You can disable it and then try updating your Discord.
Now different antiviruses have different methods of disabling. The most common and easy one is to just kill the antivirus process from the Task Manager. You can try it or you can also search on the internet about how to disable your antivirus.
Just make sure once you finish updating your Discord, just enable/start your antivirus again.
Disable Your VPN
A lot of creators and streamers use VPN to hide their physical location. Although, sometimes it is crucial if you are living in a country that has a lot of restrictions and for safety.
But it can create problems when you try updating your Discord. So just make sure when you are updating your Discord, you have your VPN disabled.
This is the final solution if none of the above methods work for you. Then you simply have to uninstall and reinstall Discord all over again to fix this Discord update failed loop error.
Now, this is not your normal uninstallation process so follow the steps carefully:
Step 1: Press the “ctrl+alt+delete” keys and select Task Manager.
Step 2: Under the Processes tab, navigate and select Discord.

Step 4: Now go to the Windows Search Bar, type “Control Panel” and hit enter.
Step 5: Click on Programs and Features.
Step 6: Here, right-click on Discord, then click on Uninstall.
Follow all the steps to uninstall the apps.
Step 7: Close everything and then press the “Windows+R” keys to open the Run dialog box.
Step 8: Type “%appdata%” and hit enter.
Step 9: Locate the Discord folder and delete it.
Step 10: Open the Run Dialog box again, type “%localappdata%” and hit enter.
