In Q1 2019, Qualcomm surprised us with its powerful flagship chipset- Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. The upgradeable version of this chipset is known as Snapdragon 855 Plus. It comes with some changes that make it’s different from the chip’s maker exciting flagship processor.

Before I talk about the difference, look at these quick specifications of both chipsets.

Talking about Snapdragon 855 Plus vs Snapdragon 855, the above table shows the key difference between this chipsets is CPU and GPU’s clock speed. It means that Snapdragon 855 Plus is an overclocked version of Snapdragon 855.

Snapdragon 855 Plus features with the ARM Cortex A76 based Kryo 485 cores. This includes a prime core, 3 mid-core & 4 efficiency cores. Here is the difference appears between the two chipsets.

The primary core of the Snapdragon 855 Plus is clocked at 2.96 GHz. On the other hand, the primary clocked of the Snapdragon 855 is clocked at 2.84GHz. This minor difference in clock speed helps the new chipset to handle more heavy graphics games & apps.

However, the architecture of both chipsets is the same. There is nothing different between them.

Another highlighting difference between these two chipsets is GPU clock speed. Both of them come with Adreno 640. But Snapdragon 850 Plus is clocked at 672MHz & Snapdragon 855 is clocked at 585 MHz.

Qualcomm promises that this difference gives 15% improvement in the gaming performances. And this is great for upcoming gaming phones.

The company also introduces new Elite Game features for The smartphone that comes with this chipset. Qualcomm will now support HDR10 rendering during gaming. It delivers much better & realistic experience while gaming. Jank Reducer makes gameplay smoother by reducing jank in a 30FPS gameplay.

The SoC supports Vulkan 1.1 API for low-level graphics. And it is much more efficient than OpenGL based graphics. There is a Q-Sync that helps to match the display’s refresh rate with the game’s frame rates to prevent screen tearing or stuttering. Elite Gaming also comes with physical based rendering & cinematic post-processing. It improves the quality of the graphics with more detailed reflections & textures.

Asus ROG 2 is the first phone that is powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset. We will also expect to see it on the upcoming Pixel & Note series.

However, Snapdragon 855+ boosts gaming performance as compared to Snapdragon 855. The main difference between them is in the GPU & CPU. It is not much difference between them.
