Windows has multiple in-built options to capture screenshots and edit them as well. So, you don’t need to install any extra software for that.

Windows PC always had an option to take a screenshot, from the earliest Windows OS to the latest update, capturing a screenshot in Windows 10 is somehow more flexible and easier as compared to other platforms. So, let’s have a look and know the various methods offered by Microsoft to take a screenshot in Windows 10.

How to Take Screenshot in Windows 10?

We are already familiar with some historical and easier methods to capture a screenshot in Windows 10, like just by pressing the PrntScr button on keyboard you can capture a snapshot. So have a look at other flexible methods to take a screenshot in Windows 10 in different forms including Full-screen, Free-form, Rectangular, and some others.

Method 1 – Using PrntScr

Well, PrntScr is an earlier method to capture a snapshot, however, it can be used with various keys and those combinations can provide you other functionalities while capturing a screenshot.

If you are a computer user then simply hit “PrntScr“, “PrtScr“, or something similar to this on your keyboard. If you are using a laptop so you need to press Fn (Function key) and PrntScr. The screenshot has been captured and copied to the clipboard, but you won’t see any change or any blink over your screen, so you need to go to the clipboard to view your screenshot.

Save Your Screenshot

If you want to save the copied screenshot in Windows 10, hit Win Key + PrntScr, and in some system’s you need to press Win Key + Ctrl + PrntScr or Win Key + Fn + PrntScr. After a few seconds, you can see your captured screenshots are saved inside a folder Screenshot inside a default folder Pictures in your PC.

All the snapshots will be named with a number by default, and the sequence of the screenshot will be based on the time they are captured.

Capture Screenshot without Saving

If you want to save a screenshot in Windows 10 without saving it, so follow the given instructions

  • Hit the “PrntScr” key. [Screenshot is now copied to clipboard]
  • Open any image editor, paint, word processor, or whatever you like to open the image.
  • Now, select Edit (or Ctrl + V), and then Paste to paste the captured screenshot.

Screenshot of Active Window Only

If you want to take a screenshot of active Window only, so need to follow the given instructions

  • Hit Alt+PrntScr.
  • Open any image editor, paint, word processor, or whatever you like to open the image.
  • Now, select Edit, and then Paste to paste the captured screenshot.

Method 2 – Using the Snipping Tool

To take a screenshot in Windows 10 using Snipping Tool, follow the following steps:

  • Go to Start menu, type Snipping Tool in the search bar.
  • To start the snipping tool, press the New button.
  • Now, snipping bar provides you to take the following kind of snips:
    • Rectangular snip– Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangular shape snap. 
    • Free-form snip– Draw a free-form shape around an object to take a screenshot of your choice. 
    • Full-screen snip- This will allow you to capture the entire screen.

Method 3 – Using the Snip & Sketch App

To take a screenshot in Windows 10 using Snip & Sketch tool, follow the following steps:

  • Open Snip & Sketch App, either by searching the Snip & Sketch App in the search menu or by pressing Windows Key + Shift + S simultaneously.
  • Now, you will be welcomed with a new dialog box with four different options:
    • Rectangular Snip: Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangular shape snap.
    • Freeform Snip: Draw a free-form shape around an object to take a screenshot of your choice.
    • Window Snip: This is to take the screenshot of the active window only.
    • Full-screen Snip: This will allow you to capture the entire screen. 

Some Key Shortcuts in Snip & Sketch toolbar

Use the following keyboard shortcuts for quick editing in Snip & Sketch, this will provide you ease in taking a screenshot in Windows 10.

  • To create a new snip, press Ctrl + N.
  • To open a file, press Ctrl + O.
  • To move the cursor to select a rectangular snip area, press Shift + arrow keys.
  • To select the eraser, press Ctrl + E.
  • To print an annotation, press Ctrl + P.
  • To undo an annotation, press Ctrl + Z.

Method 4 – Using Game Bar

Take a screenshot in Windows 10 using Game Bar. Windows 10 is featured with game DVR capabilities to record gameplay and take screenshots of Windows PC games. The screenshot captured with Game Bar is saved in PNG format by default, and Windows save them at C:\Users\[username]\Videos\Captures. To take screenshots using Game bar, you need to follow the following steps:

  • Firstly, you need to launch the Xbox app, that comes up with Windows 10. To do so,
    • Open the Xbox’s Settings.
    • Navigate to Game DVR.
    • Turn the toggle on in front of “Take screenshots using Game DVR”.
    • Assign keyboard shortcut whatever you want (by default it is Win+G).

  • Press the assigned keyboard shortcut, to take a screenshot in Windows 10.
  • If a box is prompted, tap on “Yes, this is a game“.

  • Now press Win + Alt + PrtScn to take a snapshot. [Note: The keyboard shortcut will only work if you have previously checked the Yes, this is a game box]
  • A notification will be prompted saying “Screenshot Saved“.
  • Tap on that notification to view the screenshot or go to Xbox > Game DVR > On this PC.
