Do We Need Antivirus in Our Daily Use to Protect Our System?

Nowadays, we are using various kinds of operating system and different kind of web browsers for surfing, but do we know how much safe they are, after using some safety measures, we still get into the trap of malicious applications which can harm our system. Mostly, a lot of people use Windows, Mac, and Linux as the operating system, so here we will know how safe they all are, do we need Antivirus in our daily use to protect our personal computer.

Windows 10

Here, we will talk about Windows 10 because most of us are using Windows 10 either original or pirated among all the Windows distribution by Microsoft. So, if we talk about the security of Windows, Microsoft is always been concern about the safety and protection of the user’s data and computer.

  • Windows comes up with inbuilt antivirus and threats protection system called “Windows Defender”. Windows Defender provides a vigorous collection of security features that keep you safe for the supported lifetime of your Windows 10 Device.
  • When your personal computer is secured with Windows Defender Antivirus you will receive extensive protection of your system, files, online activities from viruses, malware, spyware, and other threatening issues across email, apps, the cloud, and the web. Moreover, Windows Defender SmartScreen is built into Microsoft Edge (Windows in-built web browser) which helps in preventing you from malicious websites and downloads.
  • Windows Defender is an in-built Antivirus so you do not need to install, configure, and subscribe anything from outside, just need to update your PC.
  • Windows Firewall: Windows firewall is designed in such a way to prevent hackers and malicious software from gaining access to your device through any network or internet.

macOS

I will say Macintosh operating system by Apple Inc., is the safest operating system, because Apple provides a very strong and integrated technology to secure its system, with each update; it provides a better secure environment than before. Here, I will discuss some points and you will get an idea that how much secure macOS is

  • Built-in Security: Apple believes in the concept of integration; they design hardware and software in such a way that they work together with advanced technologies and secure your data and always help you to keep safe on the web.
  • Protection starts at the core: The technical runtime protection system work from the core of the Mac to keep your system safe from the malware.  Technologies like XD (execute disable), ASLR (address space layout randomization), and SIP (system integrity protection) ensure that processes with the root permissions be changed by the critical file system, and this makes it difficult for malware to harm your system.
  • Mac App Store:macOS provide App store, for installing apps and software, you can install it from both the internet or the Appstore because Mac ensures that all apps from the internet are checked for malicious code if any problem is found Apple can stop the new installation and block the app from launching again.
  • Encryption of Data: FileVault 2 from the Apple encrypts the entire drive on Mac, and protect your data with XTS-AES 128 encryption, and for the system with Apple T2Security chip creates and protect the system by Secure Enclave.
  • Browse Safely with Inbuilt web browser: Apple provides the safest way of browsing with their most secure browser Safari, safari prevents you from visiting fraudulent websites and those with harbor malware. If a site seems incredulous to safari it notifies you and prevents loading that site.

Apple has its complete set for security and protection from malware. Moreover, there are fewer viruses developed for macOS because a less amount of community uses it if the population of Apple users increases, may it will attract bad guys too and they will start developing malware for Apple. “Till now Apple users do not need any external antivirus for their protection because Apple has provided all the safety and security measures, you just need to update your system time-to-time”.

Linux

Linux is the open-Source operating system, with a smaller number of users and community support, the cause of this may be many people think Linux is tough to use and have fewer features and functions than other operating systems, but all these things are myths. I feel that working with Linux is way better than other OS, because it is an open-source, and lightweight OS, that does not increase the unnecessary weight on your system. Linux also provides system security to its users, it doesn’t mean that if it is open-source, so it will not concern about system security, here are some key-factors lie under Linux Security

  • Authorization: Linux assigned different permissions to each user, in Linux we have some accounts, in which by default, you will be assigned as a user, instead of other OS where by default you are an Administrator and everything is open to you, means also open to viruses, if you want to access some admin privileges, then you need to log in as an admin in the Linux, normal users are treated as a low-level entity and users do not have access to all the permissions. So, if any malicious program may enter your system, it won’t be able to harm the root directory or root files, some local files may get affected.
  • Permissions: When you receive any vulnerable or malicious mail, with some exciting line like “Check out these beautiful paintings…” and if you open that link so it means you have opened the door for those viruses too and now, they can harm your entire system. But, while you are using Linux and you opened that link so the virus will enter your system but cannot harm your files, because in Linux each file is provided with three types of permissions: read, write, and execute, that file can harm your system, only when it will have executable permission.
  • Community Support: Linux is supported with enough number of developers working on different codes and always ready to resolve your problems, not like other OS that have only a few numbers of paid developers, they too work on releasing new technologies and modernizing the system instead of paying attention toward the security too.
  • Audience: We all are familiar with the fact that Linux has a fewer audience, this point is to be noted that if a smaller number of users than fewer viruses because bad guys want to affect a large portion of users and the dominating operating system.

If you are a normal user and do not visit vulnerable sites, then there is no need to purchase any anti-virus. If you are using a dominating operating system, which is used by a large number of people, so you may need anti-virus for your system’s protection otherwise, the system’s security is enough to protect you from the threats.
