Prerequisites

If you want to make phone calls on Mac, so ensure that you are fulfilling the following requirements.

  • Your iPhone should be running on the latest version of iOS or at least iOS8.
  • You should be logged into iCloud and Face Time from iPhone and Mac too using the same Apple ID.
  • Phone Carrier should support the Wi-Fi calling feature.
  • Both devices should be connected to the Internet or the same Wi-Fi network.

Setup Your iPhone to Make Phone Calls on Mac

  • Open the Settings of your iPhone.
  • Go to Phone.
  • Depending on your Carrier, select one from the following
    • If you see Wi-Fi Calling, tap it, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
      After turning the Wi-Fi Calling on, you may find an Add Wi-Fi Calling for Other Devices button, turn it on.
    • If you see Calls on Other Devices, tap it, then turn it on.
      This will allow you to call using other devices on the same Wi-FI Network.
[Note– In older version of iPhone like iOS 8 the feature will be under FaceTime Settings, named as iPhone Cellular Calls.]

Setup Mac to Make Phone Calls on Mac

Once the WiFi calling is enabled from your iPhone, from the next when you launch FaceTime feature on your Mac you will need to turn on Calls from iPhone if you are unable to find this option, do the following:

  • Open FaceTime on macOS.
  • Go to Preferences.
  • Go to settings.
  • Turn on Calls from iPhone.

If both devices are on different Wi-Fi networks then you may find an option saying Upgrade to Wi-Fi Calling option, you can follow on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Make Phone Calls on Mac

  • Open the FaceTime app on your desktop.
  • At the top-left corner, there is an option of FaceTime Window.
  • Enter the contact name saved on your iPhone or enter a number.
  • Click on the Audio button.
