A couple of days ago, Qualcomm announced the new Snapdragon 870 SoC, which on specs-wise lies in between the new Snapdragon 888 SoC and last year’s Snapdragon 865+. And now in a couple of days, Motorola pushed their new Motorola Edge S today in China. It is the first smartphone to feature the new Snapdragon 870 SoC.

Speaking of the new Snapdragon 870 SoC, it is an octa core with one Cortex-A78 core running at 3.2 Ghz, which is the highest clock speed any mobile SoC achieved till now, not even the new flagship 888 SoC.

Motorola Edge S Design

Now, coming back to the new Motorola Edge S, it is a looking smartphone with flat display, unlike the curved displays in all previous-gen Edge series smartphones. Like the other mid-range smartphones, the Edge S also features the gradient design at the rear.

Regarding the material of the smartphone, it is made up of NCVM (Non-Conductive Vacuum Metallization) coating. At the rear, it has square camera housing, and literally looks like the household gas burner (???? yeah I am serious). It is available in two different color options: Emerald Glaze and Emerald Light (and frankly I don’t like the both).

Motorola Edge S Specifications

It features a 6.7-inch LCD IPS panel with a screen resolution of 2520×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 90 Hz, which makes the scrolling/using experience more fluid. The display comes with a pixel density of 409 PPI, and it also supports HDR10 & DCI-P3 color gamut.

The display also houses a dual hole-punch cutout for selfie cameras. And thanks to the LCD panel, Motorola couldn’t place an under-display fingerprint sensor, instead they put a fingerprint sensor on the power button.

Under the hood, the Motorola Edge S is powered by the Snapdragon 870 SoC, paired with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of on-board storage, working on UFS-3.1, that makes it the fastest onboard storage. The Snapdragon 870 is an octa-core SoC with up to 3.2 Ghz clock speed, paired with Adreno™ 650 GPU for better graphical performance.

In the camera department, the smartphone houses a quad camera setup at the rear and a dual punch-hole camera setup at the front. The quad-rear camera setup includes a primary 64-megapixel camera sensor with an aperture of f/1.7, a secondary 16-megapixel ultrawide angle sensor with an viewing angle of 121-degrees and phase-detect autofocus, and finally a 2MP fixed-focus depth sensor and a ToF sensor. The rear camera supports camera recording up to 6K with 30fps. In the front, it features a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 8-megapixel angle sensor with an viewing angle of 100-degrees.

It comes with all the necessary connectivity options like WiFi, Bluetooth 5.1, 3.5-mm headphone jack, USB Type-C ports, etc.
