Everyone knew that OnePlus is planning to unveil the OnePlus 9 series. Well, OnePlus actually made it official today in its “moonshot announcement”. OnePlus has also announced its partnership with Hasselblad for the OnePlus 9 Series cameras.

The latest upcoming smartphone series from OnePlus, the OnePlus 9 line-up is all set to launch on March 23 globally. OnePlus also announced its partnership with Hasselblad for the OnePlus 9 series and this confirms all the leaks that suggested that upcoming OnePlus flagships will have Hasselblad camera modules.

This points to the moon-themed teaser and gives us an idea of the camera performance on the new OnePlus 9 smartphones. To give you context, Hasselblad sent the first camera to the moon with the Apollo 11.

OnePlus devices always had great performance but when it comes to cameras, they are not that good as compared to the Samsung flagships and iPhones. Now with the new Hasselblad sensors for the OnePlus 9 series, we can expect some great performance on the new flagship smartphones by OnePlus.

Partnership Between OnePlus and Hasselblad

OnePlus has announced a three-year partnership with Hasselblad. Besides, OnePlus plans to invest over USD 150 million in the next 3 years to develop the best imaging capabilities to deliver the best camera experience to the OnePlus users. OnePlus is approaching four major R&D labs around the world. The list includes two imaging labs from the US and Japan.

OnePlus and Hasselblad will work together to improve the camera modules for upcoming OnePlus smartphones. This will also include better cameras from Hasselblad for the OnePlus 9 series. The camera company will provide software enhancement like color tuning, sensor calibration, and more in the future. Both companies will work together to develop better imaging technologies and improve Hasselblad Camera for Mobile.


OnePlus confirmed that the OnePlus 9 series will have a custom Sony IMX789 sensor for the primary camera. As per OnePlus, it will be the “most advanced main camera sensor” on any OnePlus device ever.

The “moonshot announcement” also hints at incredible zoom on the upcoming OnePlus 9 smartphones. With Hasselblad Pro Mode, users will get the ability to adjust their ISO, focus, exposure times, white balance, etc. With a 12-bit RAW format, users will also get even richer colors and improved dynamic range. With the 12-bit RAW, the new photos will be 64-times better at colors. Users will also get improved HDR video recording. With the new sensor by Hasselblad for the OnePlus 9 series, the user will be able to record 4K at 120fps and 8K at 30fps.

As the leaks suggest, there might be three smartphones in the OnePlus 9 series and those will be the OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 9 Lite, or OnePlus 9R. It will be interesting to see the launch on 23rd March.
